The 3 Biggest Mistakes in Career Change

The 3 Biggest Mistakes in Career Change You are going to do it. Yes Ms. Career Girl, one day you’ll realize that it’s time to move on and that you want to completely change your career. This is a big leap out of your comfort zone â€" good for you! But it’s not all rosy in career makeover land,  so let me save you some trouble. There are three mistakes you’re probably making, will make, or haven’t even thought about it. Don’t worry, they happen to the best of us â€" but you can avoid them. Not Knowing Where You Want to Go You’ve had it with your job; and here’s where the first mistake crops up to trip you. You want something different, but do you know exactly what you want? Most women break from their jobs to find nowhere to go, or worse yet, they make a bad choice in choosing their next career. Maybe you’re a nurse and have decided nursing doesn’t do it for you anymore; then being a home-care assistant would be the right solution for you, right? Well… maybe. The reasons you wanted change to begin with, could also have you longing for Fridays with the new one. Fix: Rather than letting your mind Punk you, get your career change right the first time by doing some solid outlining. Jot down what you truly enjoy about your work. Even if you’re looking to change your career, there are still some things that drew you to your former position originally and certain things about you that compliment it. Do you like helping others? Do you like the structure? Great. Now what else do you want from a job? Would you prefer a flexible schedule? How about more time at home? Perfect. Now you can narrow down what jobs would suit these needs without falling into the same inflexible, at-work-too-much hole that drove you away in the first place. Not Having a Roadmap Mistake number two.  Let’s say you jump clear over mistake number one and set your sights on a job that was practically built for you. Great! …Now what? Where do you even begin? If you want to run your shop in private consulting (hey, why wouldn’t you?), and you have the skills, that’s fantastic, but no one is going to let you take the position without a business degree, professional certification, previous experience and a strong network. For that matter, getting the position at your dream company will be impossible if they don’t know who you are. Fix: Now it’s time to lay the groundwork and chart out your course. Pull out the pen and paper again, and start reverse-engineering your career change. You want to be your own boss in the field of consulting, right?  How do you get there? Perhaps the first thing is to get in contact with the higher-ups of this. How do you get in contact with them? Through LinkedIn. Do you have a profile? Build one. Will they pay attention to you? No, so build a popular following and more connections before contacting them. Do you have the qualifications they’re looking for? No, so back to school. Do you have the experience they need? No, so look for a smaller position as a manager in a similar field.   Or,  work bro-bono, go to networking event,  or start a blog.   By having this roadmap in place, you can follow each individual step to take you to your goal â€" and it’s encouraging to look at along the way! Not Reaching Out to Others You might have guessed from the last solution that I’m in favor of networking â€" and trust me, you have to be. If you have your roadmap and your completely outlined dream job, you could run into mistake number three like a truck into a brick wall. If you’re introverted like me, or just extremely busy, it’s easy to isolate yourself and forget to reach out to others. This leaves all your efforts high and dry, because no matter how experienced you are, how can you get that ideal position if no one knows you, recommends you, or introduces you to a new opportunity? Better yet, reaching out to others may mean sometimes asking for help working out your goals and roadmap from mistakes #1 and #2 above. Meeting new people, talking through your dilemmas or even seeking professional help are all important elements of your success. Fix: It can be hard to break from your comfort zone, but take a deep breath (and get some comfort food) and get to work. By taking a few minutes every day to engage on social media with people in your desired field, or just inspirational people in general, you can make connections that will springboard you to greater opportunities. THE TOP FIVE BIGGEST DATING MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE

THE TOP FIVE BIGGEST DATING MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE Today is  National Singles Day  â€" a day as the organizers say is “for everyone, singles and couples alike, to recognize our single friends, family members, co-workers and others in our lives who are single.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau singles are 45.2% of U.S. residents 18 and older â€" that’s 110.6 million U.S. taxpayers â€" up 1.6 million from 2016. But for those who are not single by choice and looking for lasting love,  Diana Mandell, internationally acclaimed dating coach and relationship expert who has helped hundreds of men and women find love in their lives, shares the biggest mistakes to avoid when dating as well as tips for the best ways to approach men and women and tips for a healthy relationship. Diana has a private practice in NJ where she does private and group coaching and helps men and women identify the tools realistic, modern and lasting tools which leads clients to the right one. DIANA’S TOP LIST OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN DATING: NOT SCREENING DATES PROPERLY BEFORE GOING ON THEM: People often wonder why they go on so many first dates. Diana say, “When you aren’t doing the proper screening before a date, you end up going out with people who aren’t suited for you. People say it’s a numbers game, I believe it’s a number game too but in the opposite sense. I think of it like a funnel â€" at the top there should be a lot of people who you meet, interact with, and talk to. As you get to know them a bit better, it all starts to narrow and by the time you get to pursuing and actually going on a date with them, there should be very few.” Diana further explains that the object is not to go out with as many people as possible. She says, “This is the hope and pray method.” Instead Diana recommends that you notice if you see any red flags and ask yourself â€" is this someone I would want to spend a few hours with? LACK OF SELF-WORTH: Diana shares that to be a successful dater you need to have self-confidence. Dating is all about believing you deserve the best. Having low or no self-esteem can seriously derail your love life because you let people treat you poorly,  or you believe you don’t deserve a great person.  Or maybe you allow your fear of rejection to dictate your love life (i.e. you won’t make the first move because of feat of rejections), or you forget to make yourself a priority; you base your self-worth on whether your partner likes you etc. Diana says “we all have insecurities and fears. A lot of people think you either have it or you don’t but it can be learned. It’s like building muscle at the gym. As long as you give it attention and effort, you can learn to accept and like yourself. “ NOT HOLDING YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT YOU SAY YOU WANT: Diana shares that people are very bad at follow through and they justify their dating decision on one thing â€" maybe it’s looks, status or money and they completely forgot what it is they said they were wanting or needing in a relationship. “So many people say they want this and this yet the person they’re dating has none of these qualities. In fact, they often have more of the dislike qualities than the likes.” NOT COMMUNICATING WANTS/NEEDS/EXPECTATIONS  PROPERLY:   Diana says a lot of us wish that the other person could be a professional mind reader and that’s not possible. She emphasizes that you need to communicate how you feel, what you need, what makes you happy, what upsets you, what makes you uncomfortable. “As soon as the person youre dating knows this, it gives them the ability to make you happy. Provide him or her with a roadmap to happiness. If not, they are going to  assume and waste a lot of time doing things that dont  matter to you, that dont work for them.  â€œ NOT BEING AUTHENTIC BY HIDING WHO YOU REALLY ARE: If you hide who you really are then you can’t say that someone doesn’t like the real you, says Diana. “People do this to protect themselves but what ends up happening is not only are people putting up a façade but you never get to experience someone truly loving you for the good, bad and ugly you bring.” APPROACHING MEN OR WOMEN So once you know what not to do when dating, let’s talk about how to start dating. Diana recommends men need to approach more. However, she suggests that they don’t because they have approach anxiety. Diana recalls when she did her market research the two things guy feared the most are failing and/or getting rejected.  She tells her male clients once they stop focusing so much on the outcome and letting her looks intimidate you, then this all becomes so much easier. Diana says men are also afraid of looking creepy. She tells her clients “you only look creepy when you’re incredibly nervous or you’re really desperate. Women can smell that from a mile away. The nice guys aren’t doing a good enough job at approaching women but they beat themselves up for not doing it at all. (Can you make this sentence clearer please?) Diana says women complain that the guys who approach them typically are not who they want to approach them. Diana tells women the easy solution is to go up and approach the guy who you’re interested in getting to know. “The only point of approaching someone is gaining enough information from them to see whether they are worth pursuing or not, that’s all. It’s fact finding.” DIANA’S TOP 5 TIPS FOR FINDING A LASTING RELATIONSHIP: MAKE TIME FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT DAILY: Diana says, “the better you show up in the relationship, the better the relationship is.” She recommends creating a morning and evening routine that fits in your schedule. In that routine, she recommends journaling, meditating with positive affirmations, going to the gym, spending time doing something that you love like watching garbage tv, calling a friend, taking a bath or walk.  She also suggests everyone have a therapist or coach they see weekly. MAKE TIME FOR THE PERSON YOU’RE DATING: Putting in time and effort, Diana says, is the most important piece of a lasting relationship.  Diana says “I find that a lot of people work really hard at their job and when they come home, they just turn off and don’t want to do more work. Relationships, no matter how healthy or how much you love each other, require work and it’s a time commitment.” ALWAYS COMMUNICATE: Be sure you’re constantly communicating. Diana shares, “It can be for 5 minutes if that’s all you need. I’m not saying you should speak every day for hours but you should consistently be speaking to one another knowing what’s going on individually, how work is, how your family and friends are, and how the two of you are doing.” Diana recommends always checking in because often people have things in their mind but either don’t want to make it a thing or they don’t know how to bring it up. “Give each other that time and the platform to speak to one another. Another tip is not to get defensive when you don’t always like what you hear. Honesty is best and sometimes it stings to hear but it’s important.” APPRECIATE EACH OTHER: “Take time to appreciate one another,” Diana says. Tell your partner that you appreciate the things they do â€" big and small. This is important.” PRACTICE SPONTANEITY: Diana recommends doing cute things for each other, even if it’s small. Diana recommends, “If your partner loves cupcakes, come home and surprise them with some on a random night; take weekend trips together; change things up in the bedroom. Do things to shake up the routine a bit.” ABOUT DIANA MANDELL Diana was a hopeless romantic who hopelessly fell in love with all the wrong guys. She didn’t realize until much later, after learning the hard way too many times and being betrayed by a close friend, that there was actually a skill set involved with being the right person and finding your best match. So, she decided to document her successes and failures of her love life so no one would have to go through the same hardships and became a dating coach. She graduated from  The University of Central Florida and Fordham University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and became a Licensed Master of Social Work.   Diana has a private practice in New Jersey where she offers 1:1 and group coaching.  Over the past 5 years, she’s helped hundreds of men and women find and keep love. She has been featured in Lady Boss Blogger, Elite Daily, Thrive Global and Your Tango.

Good With Numbers Make This the Basis For Your Next Career Change â€" CareerMetis.com Are you stuck in a rut in your current career?Maybe it’s time to get out and explore new options and new opportunities. Don’t assume that just because you’ve been doing what you do now for a long time that you have to carry on doing it. That logic is unhelpful and unnecessary.Instead, you should think about what you’re good at and go from there. If you’re good with numbers, there are plenty of options to consider, so if you want to make this the basis for your next career change, here’s how to approach it.1. Know Your Specific Skills and Level of ProficiencyevalThere are so many numbers-related jobs out there, so you need to pause to give some thought to which of them suit you and your skills best. Of course, not every new career path you could choose to pursue will require new qualifications, so do your research and find out for yourself.3. Look Into Data and Analysis JobsThese days, you can’t get away from the importance of data. It’s everywhere, and there are companies in every industry and sector that collect data in ways that they never did before. It can relate to their everyday processes or the customers that spend their money buying products or services from the company.Using and analysingthat kind of data takes someone with a head for numbers, so it could be a career path that you consider as you make this career switch.4. Make Use of Your Transferable SkillsevalIf you’re making a career change, you will have a whole lot of skills that might not be linked to the new jobthat you want to take on. However, that doesn’t mean that you haven’t gained skills and experience in your previous career that can be transferred to your new one.Maybe you have experience managing a team or are known as a good communicator. The Flyers, my birthday, and where Im going on vacation next week

The Flyers, my birthday, and where Im going on vacation next week 0 Flares 0 Flares Some know that Im a pretty wild hockey nut, and and a die hard Philadelphia Flyers fan.  For the first time in 13 years, the Flyers made it to the Stanley Cup Finals this year, which was a bigger deal to me than I could ever explain in words. When I was 2 or 3 years old, my father, a long time season ticket holder, started bringing me to games with him, and my passion for the sport began. We havent won a championship in 35 years, so the last two weeks, and all of this years playoffs have been exciting.  We finished the year as the 7th seed, and somehow managed to overcome impossible odds to make it to the finals.  While we lost to the Hawks, Im proud of the team and everything they accomplished.  Its been one hell of a run, but the playoffs have consumed my mind a good bit, and Ive been away from the blog more than I liked to. Consider this my lengthy thank you to the Flyers, and also my apology to you, for being MIA. So what else oh, its my birthday tomorrow.  Yep, Mr. Corn turns 27 tomorrow.  While Im celebrating tonight, the real party begins next week in the Outer Banks down in North Carolina.  Me and 7 friends have rented a house for the week and I couldnt be more excited.  While away I will try to get a video post up and show something scenic, but dont hold your breath.  I havent done too many of those, so Im not sure why Ill start.  Maybe Ill see something that inspires me to turn on the new Kodak zi8 camera I got for the birthday.  Maybe. Lastly, Ive set up three guest bloggers for next week while Im away.  I know that you will enjoy what Srinivas Rao, Sarah White, and Lauren Koda bring to COTJ next week.  Not exactly sure what day they their posts will go live, but stay tuned and check back next week to find out.

Three Things to Avoid to Be a Good Leader - Hallie Crawford

Three Things to Avoid to Be a Good Leader Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. â€"Jack Welch To be a successful leader, it is important to help your employees grow. Because new hires are the future of your organization, it is critical to train them well and empower them to become successful in their role as well as within your organization. Not everyone understands intuitively how to lead. Here are some common errors that even the most well-intentioned leader can make and what you should avoid in your own leadership role. Micromanaging. Too many leaders say that to do something well, they have to do it themselves. (A client of ours who is a sales manager just said this to me the other day; she has a hard time letting go.) While doing it yourself may sometimes be true, that attitude does not benefit your employees or your department in the long run. If you are constantly re-checking and re-doing their work or not giving them the opportunity to take on a challenge, it stifles their enthusiasm, their creativity, and their ability to learn on their own and as a result, everyone will feel stressed out in addition to not growing in their role. What to do instead: Trust your employees. Take the time to explain what you need and expect of them clearly before handing them an assignment. Then let them approach the project in a way that makes sense for them. As long as you get the result you need, things will be fine. There are many ways of doing the same thing, and none of them are wrong. Resist the urge to check in. Allow them to make their own mistakes sometimes. Check their work only when you really need to or at the end of the project before it’s handed to the client. Being Mechanical. It is important to stay on track with projects and goals. But it’s also important to recognize that your employees spend a little over a third of their week at work and they need to feel comfortable and like they belong to a team. If your employees feel like they are just there to push papers, they won’t last long because they won’t feel valued and engaged. What to do instead: While every company and industry has its own culture, ask yourself if you are helping to cultivate the culture you want to create. One where your employees feel like they can share ideas, laugh, are challenged and feel valued. If you feel you should make adjustments to have a more open office culture, think of one thing you can do this week to make your employees feel appreciated. Not Mentoring. Don’t let the word “mentor” scare you. You don’t have to be an official mentor to be a mentor to your employees. The definition of a mentor is someone who advises and trains. A successful leader should do both. Encourage your employees to seek mentors outside of your organization as well, but realize that to be a solid leader you need to take this approach with them in addition to assigning tasks or managing their projects. What to do instead: Provide consistent, specific feedback to your employees. Let them know what they’re doing well, and what needs improvement. Help them to see how they can do their job better. Work together with them to find solutions by asking them questions. Find out what motivates them and what their strengths are, then leverage those so they can be their most productive. It may take a little more time in your schedule, but it will pay off in the long run.
