3 Proofreading Tips to Keep Your Resume Mistake Free - Walrath Recruiting, Inc.

3 Proofreading Tips to Keep Your Resume Mistake Free - Walrath Recruiting, Inc. It goes without saying that your resume is one of the most important documents you will write. Its the item that an employer will use to judge whether or not they should interview you. So your resume could be the path to many great opportunities in your career. However, if there are mistakes on your resume, that path will be much longer. Today, were going to share some of our favorite proofreading tips for keeping your resume mistake free. These dont take too long, and while some of them may seem odd, they are effective! 1. Read It Out Loud You may feel silly reading your resume out loud to yourself, but its actually incredibly helpful in finding mistakes. While composing your resume, you may miss a word you left out, or not realize how odd your sentence structure is. By reading it out loud, you increase the likelihood that you dont miss any of those mistakes. However, its important to read word to word. You dont want to just focus on the sentence. Make sure you read every word instead of skim reading. If you breeze through reading it out loud, you may miss some of the mistakes youd want to fix. 2. Read It Backwards When we say read it backwards, we dont actually mean read the whole thing backwards. Instead, when you are looking for misspellings, start from the end and work backwards. Instead of starting sentences at the beginning, start at the end and move backward, word by word. Looking at each word individually outside of the sentence structure will make you more likely to catch a misspelling. If you are just reading through the resume for errors, you will probably miss a few of them. It may be a somewhat painful process, but its important to remember that even one mistake could spell disaster. Recruiters judge resumes very harshly, because they know candidates should realize their importance. Having even one misspelling on your resume may be reason enough to get it thrown in the trash. 3. Have Someone Else Read It You may have already thought to do this, but this recommendation has two purposes. First of all, you should just get a second pair of eyes on your resume. If you know someone who has good grammar skills, have them give your resume a look through. If you wrote the document yourself you may miss some errors because theyre not new to you. A fresh pair of eyes wont have that problem, and may catch some things you wouldnt notice. Secondly, you may want to also have someone in your field look at your resume. This isnt as much about the proofreading, but its still sound advice we wanted to include. By having someone else in your field look at it, you get a second opinion from someone who understands what your resume is trying to convey. So they may not find any misspellings, but they may be able to make recommendations on which skills or tasks you should highlight. Dont be self conscious about having others look over your resume. Those constructive criticisms and/or recommendations could make a world of difference, so its worth it to seek them out! Thats it for our three tips! Theyre very simple, and dont take a lot of time to complete either. For investing just a few minutes, you can save yourself a lot of trouble and weed out all of those pesky misspellings and errors from your resume. If you follow the last tip, you may even receive some valuable advice on updating your resume. We hope these tips keep all of those annoying mistakes and misspellings off of your resume!
